Billy

Billy arrived with Teddy at HeeHaws in the first week of January 2021. In contrast to Teddy, Billy was carrying quite a few fat pads from having too much lush grass, which is not good for donkeys. We were told that Billy wasn’t used to being handled (he had spent 18 years just being left in his field, and only being caught every now and then for the farrier) and was therefore reported to us as ‘quite wild’. He wasn’t wild at all, just terrified of humans.

He has improved since being here and trusts certain people, especially if they have treats! Sadly his fear is deeply ingrained and he needs to gain a lot more confidence before we can look for his forever home. Danielle and Carina are working with him regularly and hope that it won’t be long before he really turns a corner and realises that we humans really can be trusted ❤️

UPDATE
A month or so ago, we were contacted by Elise and her family. They have 2 horses and lots of rescue dogs and have recently moved to a smallholding. They felt that 2 donkeys would make a great addition to their family and would also keep the horses company. Donkeys would be great companions for the field mate horse, whilst the other horse is being ridden.
After a long conversation about the donkeys we have here, and Elise explaining that one of her daughters is doing equine studies, it suddenly struck us that this could be the perfect home for our Billy and Teddy! ❤️
We refer to Billy and Teddy as our special needs donkeys. It’s been slow progress for Billy. 18 years of not being handled has taken its toll on him.
Literally 2 days later, Elise, her 2 girls, and her sister in law travelled the 2 1/2 hours to come and meet the donkeys and us. What a lovely couple of hours we had! They all fell in love with Billy and Teddy, I mean, who wouldn’t? ❤️
The family are now in the process of getting their land and barns ready and are hoping to be able to take the boys in the next 3 months or so. How exciting!
Billy and Teddy will get lots of love and cuddles, which is just what they need. We will, of course, keep you all updated as things progress. You can see from the photos that it was love at first sight for everyone, and Billy and Teddy seemed very relaxed, which was wonderful to see! ❤️❤️
