They got their donkeys, Bill and Ben, (brothers born on the same day to different mums) when they were 8 years old. They had a great life together until one day, after no warning whatsoever, and now aged 34, Ben suddenly died one night leaving Bill bereft and everyone in shock. They were afraid of people and especially the farrier. They had  issues around having their feet trimmed, but we and the farrier  worked very hard to teach them that it can be a kind and easy experience. - [Beatrice](https://heehaws.fr/beatrice-2/): 1979-2023 In May 2019 Beatrice arrived here at Heehaws with her friend Bluebelle. She was in a very sorry state. She had lice and was very thin. She also had a skin condition, but with all the HeeHaws care, love, lotions, and potions lavished on her, she soon looked as amazing as her field mates Duchesse and Princesse!  Our lovely, very woolly Beatrice, aged 40 something was quite the character and became a firm favourite with everyone that met her. His story began when his loving mother, gave birth to him and then fell terribly ill. Tragically, just a month later, this tiny foal found himself utterly alone in a vast field, his mother miles away seeking treatment, and his older brother rehomed.  With his mother’s future uncertain due to a liver condition, this poor orphaned soul had been relying on his elderly owner to bottle-feed him. - [Rupert](https://heehaws.fr/rupert/): Darling Rupert was born on 7th July 2023. His mum Blossom had given birth 5 times before that we know of. However, she didn’t have an easy delivery and we had to step in and help.  Rupert arrived a big healthy foal and was standing and feeding as he should in no time. He’s growing by the day and is going to be a BIG stocky donkey, just like his daddy Wallace and siblings Basil and Harley. He’s very friendly and loves a fuss. When they arrived here, already in foal, they were very nervous around people. It took quite some time to help them learn to trust but thankfully we worked our magic and they improved hugely before their foals were born. Headed for the meat wagon they were intercepted thankfully and came here, to a place of love and safety. Given what they had been through, these young donkeys were very kind and trusting. We always ensure that all the donkeys that leave here for their forever homes, are well-behaved for the vet and farrier, and are used to being groomed and loved. - [Melanie](https://heehaws.fr/melanie/): HeeHaws Vet We’ve been very fortunate at HeeHaws to have such knowledgeable, sympathetic, and kind vets. Quite recently Melanie was taken on as the dedicated equine vet for her practice and she is no exception. The donkeys love her and she has a true understanding of them which is quite unique to find. We are lucky to have such a wonderful vet who seems to go the extra mile. ❤️ 
- [Dudley](https://heehaws.fr/dudley/): DUDLEY 1990 – 2021 Dudley and Dolly, a father and daughter, came here in October 2016,  before HeeHaws evolved. Aged 26 and 6, their elderly owner had Alzheimer’s and could no longer look after them. Dudley arrived with terrible issues with his hooves. They had been very very long and he obviously had bad memories of them being trimmed. With a lot of TLC from our fabulous farrier Gareth, Dudley was no longer afraid. I moaned a bit – well, you’ve got to eh?! – but I secretly love it. The donkeys are fantastic characters, it’s been really nice to get out and meet new people and it feels great doing something useful for a good cause. ❤️

Because I’ve always adored donkeys I chose to volunteer at HeeHaws and it’s been brilliant. Loads of laughs with my fellow volunteers (and the donkeys!) and the fresh air and physical work has been great for both mind and body. I can heartily recommend it! ❤️

The girls helped the donkeys and found them temporary accommodation. After contacting many other rescue organisations without any success or even replies, they contacted us. She had been bred but the breeder had got rid of her to a ruthless dealer who just didn’t care. She was underweight and had overgrown hooves. We were told she had been put in a cattle crush to have her feet trimmed, which must have been terrifying for her. We have found her to be a gentle soul and most surprisingly she loves Gareth, our farrier! - [Teddy](https://heehaws.fr/donkey-teddy/): Teddy arrived at HeeHaws with Billy in the first week of January 2021. In contrast to Billy, Teddy was thin and had very overgrown feet. He had lice, worms, and an ulcerated mouth, so much so he could hardly eat.  It took many visits from the vet and Gareth to get Teddy feeling better. Before too long, Teddy put on weight and settled down quite quickly. His field was littered with barbed wire, broken glass, and all kinds of dangers for donkeys. He also had ‘Aladdins slipper’ type hooves. He had often been wrestled to the floor by a gang of men and had the tops of his hooves sawn off. This was not only cruel but very frightening for him. Once owned and very much loved and cared for, their elderly owner had developed dementia and, as a result, had forgotten about feeding them or having their hooves trimmed and they were suffering the consequences.  A home had been found for them but it fell through so they were kindly taken into a temporary foster home until something permanent could be found. Like Beatrice she was thin, had lice and worms, and was generally unhappy. We started her on a feeding regime alongside Beatrice but after a week she had colic, then another bout, and another. We decided to organise our own tests and it seemed that she had an intolerance to cereal feed and sugar. - [Blossom](https://heehaws.fr/donkey-blossom/): Blossom arrived here in August 2022 with her 4 and-1/2-month-old foal, Harley. Blossom was one of a herd of 5, living in a state of general neglect. The original owner had left her partner and for over a year he hadn’t taken care of them. The fencing where they were had come down and 3 of them frequently left the paddock searching for food. - [Billy](https://heehaws.fr/donkey-billy/): Billy arrived with Teddy at HeeHaws in the first week of January 2021. In contrast to Teddy, Billy was carrying quite a few fat pads from having too much lush grass, which is not good for donkeys. We were told that Billy wasn’t used to being handled (he had spent 18 years just being left in his field, and only being caught every now and then for the farrier) and was therefore reported to us as ‘quite wild’. - [Belle, Merlin and Gandalf](https://heehaws.fr/donkey-belle-merlin-and-gandalf/): UPDATE: Sadly Merlin, passed away in 2019. His obesity and neglect had taken its toll and he lost his battle for life. Belle also passed away in September 2020. The grand old lady that she was, had lost weight and condition despite every effort to give her the best feed. We can only thank Judith and Rod for adopting them and for doing their very best for them. This just leaves cheeky Gandalf the goat who lives with his friend Gary. - [Beatrice OLD](https://heehaws.fr/beatrice/): 1979-2023 In May 2019 the wonderful Felicity Taylor at Pegasus in Normandy saved 5 donkeys from the meat man. She initially took them in and then Duchesse and Princesse came here. HeeHaws found the 3rd donkey Charlie a fantastic loving home. Bluebelle and Beatrice stayed with Felicity.
